Self+Care

“we are not the survival of the fittest. we are the survival of the nurtured.” - louis cozolino

Our human nature is to care and have compassion for one another. Renowned anthropologist, Margaret Mead, was once asked by a student, "What is the earliest sign of civilization?" The answer she gave was both unexpected and deeply revealing of our innate nature as human beings.  After a moment of contemplation, Mead responded with, "A healed femur."

She explained that, in species that subscribe to the law of survival of the fittest, a broken femur bone is fatal. As the longest bone in the body, connecting hip to knee, the femur takes six weeks of rest and care to heal without the aid of modern medicine. A healed femur is proof that a human being felt compassion for another, acted on that emotion, and took care of that injured person until the bone healed.  Therefore, care and compassion are not just at the core of our civilization; they are the core of who we are as human beings.
